PhD Studentship in Islamic Maritime traditions of the Red Sea and the Arabian and/or Persian Gulf

The Institute of Arab & Islamic Studies is offering one full-time three-year PhD studentship to start in October 2009.
Applicants are invited for a doctoral research studentship in the discipline of Maritime Ethnography or Islamic Archaeology or Islamic History. The doctoral student will be joining a collaborative project funded by a generous grant from the Golden Web Foundation. She/he will be expected to undertake research work with Professor Dionisius A. Agius in the research project entitled MARES - a multidisciplinary, multi-period project focusing on the maritime traditions of the peoples of the Red Sea and Arabian or Persian Gulf.
Candidates should have a good honours degree and a Masters degree in a relevant subject (anthropology, ethnography, history, archaeology). Knowledge of Classical Arabic and Spoken Arabic and/or Classical and Modern Persian is desirable.
Successful candidates receive a stipend plus tuition fees (provision for fieldwork and research expenses will be made to cover the costs of travel to and from the UK relating to this project).

Two three-year project studentships are available beginning from 1 October 2009 as part of the AHRC award to the project ‘Method in philosophical aesthetics: the challenge from the sciences’. These studentships include fees, maintenance, and funds for travel. One studentship is based at Leeds and one at Nottingham.
Area(s) of interest could include topics such as:
- the role of intuition and causal explanation in aesthetics
- the psychology and epistemology of aesthetic preference and judgement
- the psychology of character and its representation in art
- perceptual and cognitive processing and aesthetic value
- scepticism about the import of empirical work for aesthetics
- literature, linguistics and pragmatics

The Department of English at the University of Exeter is ranked 1st in the UK for world-leading research. With a large postgraduate community and over 40 academic staff we offer an exciting place to pursue postgraduate studies with excellent supervision and our student satisfaction is amongst the highest in the country. We are currently offering:
7 PhD Studentships: all fees paid for three years plus an annual maintenance grant equivalent to the AHRC per year for three years. In 2008/09 this was £12,940, the 2009/10 grant will be announced later in the year.
16 PhD Bursaries: £7,000 per year for three years. Bursary recipients will be required to carry out 80 hours support work a year within the School in the form of teaching, research support or as International Ambassador.
We offer supervision in all areas of research, with research groups and strengths in the following areas: Medieval and Renaissance; Eighteenth-Century; Victorian; Twentieth-Century and Contemporary English literature; American literature; Film; and Creative Writing. Postgraduate activity is also growing in Cornwall with a distinctive theme of research on Place and Environment. There are also specialist Centres for Creative Writing; Literature, Identity and Place (in Cornwall); South West Writing; and Victorian Studies. We can also offer the opportunity for interdisciplinary research and the contextual study of culture. We participate in interdisciplinary centres or networks dedicated to Early Modern Studies, Film, Medical History, Medieval Studies, Migration, and Sex and Gender.
We offer an excellent postgraduate study environment including a postgraduate suite, dedicated IT rooms, specialist training, funding for travel, Research Assistantships, a nationally-acclaimed Teaching Assistantship scheme and support for PG conferences. Students also have access to unique research resources and collections.
Entry criteria
We invite applications for any of our specialisms from candidates with a strong academic background and a clear and engaging research proposal which can be developed through available research supervision. Successful applicants normally have a good first degree (2.1 or equivalent) in English or the field of humanities, and a Masters degree at Merit level.

The Department of History at Queen Mary, University of London is pleased to announce that it has
3 PhD studentships to cover fees and maintenance between 2009 – 2012.
The studentship is fully-funded providing a maintenance grant at the London rate paid by the Research Councils and will be awarded by the Summer of 2009. Fees are waived for both home and overseas students.

Postgraduate Studentships in Arts, Humanities, and Law

We are looking to appoint two fully funded three-year PhD studentships as part of the Centre for Medical History, Wellcome Trust Strategic Award.
Successful applicants will explore the treatises of Galen; their impact from the Classical to the Early Modern Period; and their publication and dissemination in England before 1800 in both learned languages and English translations.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified students for:
- A studentship in editing and translating Galen (advanced knowledge of Greek is essential)
- A studentship in the use and publication of Galen in early modern England (advanced knowledge of Latin is essential; knowledge of the period desirable but not essential).
The studentships include fees at the Home/EU rate and a living allowance of £18,053 in the first year, rising to £21,321 in the third. Candidates should have a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours Degree and Masters Degree in an appropriate discipline.
The first project will be led by Professor John Wilkins in the Department of Classics and Ancient History, and the second by Dr Jonathan Barry in the Centre for Medical History. The Centre for Medical History and Department of Classics and Ancient History
The Centre for Medical History was established in 1998 and has been directed by Joseph Melling and Mark Jackson successively. The Centre has an excellent reputation for international research and is enthusiastically supported by colleagues from five departments within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as sister Schools around the University. Its research profile is extremely high, having succeeded in securing Strategic Awards from the Wellcome Trust for two five-year periods. Two Beresford PhD Scholarships in History

Thanks to a generous donation from the late Professor Maurice Beresford, the School of History at the University of Leeds, UK, has two brand new PhD scholarships to offer in 2009/10 for study commencing on 1 October 2009.
The awards will cover University tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, and will provide a maintenance award of £10,000 per year for three years (pro rata over five years for part time students). International scholarship holders may opt to alter the terms of the scholarship to pay full International fees and receive the balance as a small yearly maintenance payment.
Proposals from students interested in UK and European history from 1000 A.D. with a preference for landscape, agrarian and urban history are particularly solicited, but others will not be excluded.
In order to be eligible to be considered for these scholarships, you must:
• have applied and normally have received an offer for a place in the School of History
• have supplied us with copies of transcripts from previous degrees, a detailed PhD research proposal and two academic references by the deadline of 4pm on 30 June 2009
